The core of a missional community is a group of believers who live and experience life together like a family.

In a physical family, who live under one roof, keeping in contact amidst all the busyness can be a challenge. Extend that family beyond your household and keeping contact can prove problematic.

Technology is a great way to unite the relational and organizational needs of a missional community. When applied strategically, it can deepen your relationships by keeping you informed about life issues and needs.

Depending on your budget and needs, there is no shortage of options available for small group management.

The focus of this article is small, light weight options available to you. For the sake of comparison, I've broken the options into two sections…

Free

These options all have a free entry level option available. Upgrades or additional functionality may incur a cost..

Google Groups

Google Groups offers two solutions.

  1. Invitation based groups that share content via the web and email. Only invited user can participate in the discussion and receive email notifications of group content or events.
  2. User groups with public access where you can share content with a large group of people. Anyone interested in your group or topic can follow the conversation, comment or learn about events

SilkStart

SilkStart offers a membership database with the ability to track registrations, payments and send emails. Users can register online for the group and respond to event invitations through a responsive calendar. Added support includes emails, websites, social media integration and membership reports.

MemberPlanet

MemberPlanet offers a non-profit specific group building option. Their database supports customizable member profile with real-time reporting. Create events, manage RSVPs, host signups and more with email, text message (SMS) and branded mobile app support.

Low Cost

These options focus on small group management and tie together with larger Church Management Solutions (ChMS).  All options have a cost for the software.

ChurchTeams

ChurchTeams is small group and church management software. The discipleship and small groups solution allows you to break your church life up by group. Tracking members, group health, organizational structure and service opportunities. Users can find existing groups based on interest and connect directly with group leaders and ministries. Leaders can communicate via email with members and interested new comers.

Pricing based on database size and billed semi-annual or annually with an entry level of $240 a year.

Track individual groups and leaders or each person's personal ministry involvement. Text and Email reminders help leaders stay engaged with active groups and update needed information. Public group finder and interactive maps allow people to find a group near them with minimal effort.

Roll Call Groups

Roll Call Groups and Class Management is  a better way to manage your ministry groups. Working in tandem with Roll Call ChMS it helps you track peoples involvement and communicate with them via email and letter. Basic features include activity follow-up,  and creation of group directories and activity rosters. Add-ons include mobile check-in, giving and cloud hosting. Roll Call Connect is another great communication option.

Pricing is based on number of database entries and user licenses needed, with an entry level of $129. Add-ons solutions are priced independently.
