3 Reasons Why We Don’t Have To Wait For Church in the Metaverse

-

Virtual reality is making church in the metaverse a reality, and it’s giving people a true, immersive experience.

The idea of church in the metaverse once seemed like a far-off, sci-fi dream, but one pandemic later, things have changed. These virtual churches have not just sprung into existence but also seen major growth.

With the proliferation of VR technology, the spiritual space is no longer confined to physical buildings alone. Instead, the only constraint becomes the imagination.

Now that there are actual VR churches in existence – ones with real congregations and even baptisms – it’s clear that we do not have to wait for a world where church can be held in the metaverse any longer. In this article, we’ll explore what is making it easier than ever.

3 Reasons Why We Don’t Have To Wait For Church in the Metaverse

1. The Barrier to Entry For VR is Getting Lower

One of the major reasons why VR is becoming a popular option for church is that the technology has steadily become more streamlined and affordable as time goes on.

This is major news when it comes to making church in the metaverse church a reality.

The tech giants behind the VR headsets that are popularly available on the market have recently made major price cuts – an early sign that VR is headed for the general public rather than being just for early adopters. Pair that with increasing ease of use and adoption is predicted to skyrocket.

But VR capabilities are not limited to pricey headsets alone. Google’s Daydream View headset, or even Google Cardboard, has proven to be suitable for VR uses and comes at a low cost of just a few dollars.

Pair this lowered cost with the fact that churchgoers are becoming more technologically inclined by the generation, and it’s possible to see how VR church is already finding a foothold in the world of today.

2. Metaverse Church Is Already Bringing People Back To Pews

Many traditional churchgoers and leaders have expressed concerns about the validity of digital churches in the past, so how is church in the metaverse any different?

According to reviews from attendees, the answer is in the immersion. Congregation goers with disabilities or diagnoses leaving them homebound have described touching experiences in which they were able to assume a virtual presence,  join their fellow believers in beautiful virtual scenery and view 3D scriptures – all while attended to by a real pastor.

Because there are so few limitations to virtual reality, church no longer has to be in a traditional church building. Why not host a prayer group around a campfire on the beach? Or hold a Christmas service in the limestone hills of ancient Bethlehem?

It’s bringing scripture to life in all-new ways.

3. Metaverse Church Is Church Anywhere

Planning on traveling, or having an extended holiday? Usually, this would mean saying goodbye to church attendance until returning.

This is not the case with church in the metaverse.

Having a church in virtual reality means that for the congregation, the Word is with them in their pocket wherever they go. Borders fall away and it’s suddenly easy to find a virtual church with attendees from all over the globe. They can join church-based VR events during the week, explore themed spaces made by the church, and really live their lives in God unlike before.

To attendees, the experience is one that offers the best of both worlds – the ability to still be part of a church community, and attend from anywhere without limits on their physical location.

The moral of the story is that church is not a building. Church is in the people that attend it – the community found in sharing faith and support. That means that if the people are joining virtual reality, church can be in virtual reality.

Churches Should Explore The Virtual Reality Boom

For churches looking towards the future, exploring virtual reality is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor and really define what the future of metaverse churches will look like.

It’s key for the church to evolve with the times, and most importantly, to meet people where they are at. In a world that is both experiencing a fourth industrial revolution and a decrease in traditional church attendance, these explorations of faith services using technology are an essential frontier to conquer to ensure the longevity of churches for decades to come.
