TL;DR Churches often overinvest in audio, video, and lighting (AVL) while neglecting facility tech—yet healthy buildings are the foundation of effective ministry. 1. AVL thrives only if roofs, HVAC, and electrical systems work reliably. 2. Facility tech (HVAC controls, sensors, access systems) saves time and money daily. 3. Balanced stewardship means investing in both worship tech and infrastructure. 4. Tools like eSPACE free up staff hours and improve long-term efficiency. |
Technology is advancing at an incredible pace, transforming the way we live and work. Think about the tools you use today—were they even around a decade ago? Some may argue that certain innovations feel more like toys than tools, but there’s no denying their impact. Consider these everyday examples:
- My new stove can be controlled from an app on my phone.
- My car warns me when I’m too close to another object.
- Virtual meetings on Zoom and Teams feel like they’ve always been part of our workflow.
- Wireless sensors track humidity levels in my crawl space.
- Amazon Echo devices help with music, reminders, and more.
And that’s just scratching the surface.
Are We Over-Prioritizing AVL Systems?
In the church world, technology plays an ever-growing role, especially in audio, video, and lighting (AVL). While churches are often behind the curve in adopting commercial technology, AVL departments tend to be on the cutting edge.
Don’t get me wrong—I fully support using technology to enhance worship through high-quality sound, lighting, and video. These tools help create an engaging and relatable experience. However, what often gets overlooked is the infrastructure that supports these advancements.

Ask yourself:
- Where would the Tech Director mount that new LED screen if the roof leaks or fails?
- How would the AVL team operate if the worship center couldn’t stay cool due to outdated HVAC?
- What happens when the church upgrades AVL systems but lacks sufficient electrical service to support them?
The Need for Balance: Technology Beyond AVL
The reality is that 99% of AVL installations depend on a well-maintained building. Yet, when churches invest in technology, facility management often takes a back seat.

One of our team members recently conducted a Facility Condition Assessment at a church that was installing a new LED wall in their worship center. The worship pastor was excited about the time savings—no more elaborate stage sets or backdrops. That’s a great example of technology streamlining work.
However, at the same church:
- No centralized system controlled HVAC, lighting, or security.
- Door access and digital signage weren’t integrated.
- No facility sensors existed to warn of failing equipment.
While AVL improvements were prioritized, critical facility management technology was overlooked—technology that could save time, energy, and money daily.
Smart Stewardship: Leveraging eSPACE
Churches using eSPACE report saving 4–6 hours per week just by integrating HVAC controls—adding up to 200–300 hours per year. Imagine what your team could accomplish with that extra time. Unfortunately, facilities are often the last consideration when churches explore technology-driven efficiency. This raises an important question: Are we applying technology fairly across all areas of church operations?
If your church is facing this imbalance, let’s talk. Our team can help you steward your facility more effectively, ensuring that both worship and infrastructure receive the attention they deserve.
