From Ministry Mediocrity to Passionate Excellence

-

Excellence from church tech ministries is expected and becoming the norm quite quickly. That’s good in one way because it continues to show that church is truly shining and reflecting God’s radiant glory through His people. On the other hand though, it’s starting to create an invisible comfort zone that we all should take note of and steer clear from falling into that trap.excellence blocks

Passionate excellence is what’s up ahead. Two words that is extremely powerful. But how is that even possible one might ask? Breaking the barrier of excellence? You might be thinking, I can’t even get excellence consistently in the way we currently operate our church tech ministries. Especially when it comes to running a volunteer operation. Well guess what friends, this is what’s up ahead and I am absolutely convinced that in the coming years, passionate excellence in our church tech ministries will become the new standard.

The fact is that God requires our absolute best. This means that as we refine our calling, operate in excellence and have the deep caring of passion for it, God expects us to not only model that in our own lives but also for His kingdom, His glory. He expects nothing less. This scripture is a constant reminder to me of what He requires. In Colossians 3:23-24 it says:

Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (meaning: very, to a great degree) (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men. Knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance, which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah).

That scripture is pretty clear and concise. We are to do nothing less than our best, to a great degree. So what is passionate excellence? Let’s start with the two words by themselves. The dictionary defines them this way:

  • Passionate: showing or caused by strong feelings or a strong belief.
  • Excellence: the quality of being outstanding or extremely good.

The way I define Passionate Excellence is; the melding of a deep caring for your calling combined with being extremely good at your talent.

Here are some examples of what I believe Passionate Excellence should look like:

  • Before engaging in services pray that God would use you for his glory, that He would use your ears, your hands and your eyes to glorify Him and serve His people. Pray that His presence would wash over you.
  • Show up early. It’s crucial and exemplifies passion. Allow adequate time to do a mini run-through of ALL production related audio, video and lighting related items.
  • Pay specific attention to the production details prior to, during and after the production.
  • Staying fully engaged in the production.
  • Be proactive. More times than not, you know what you expect from your pastors. Anticipate their needs.
  • Discipline yourself and practice the worship songs the week prior to the production. Build confidence with the gear and your own performance in live production.
  • Engage in worship. You are a worshipper. Be consciously thinking, “is there anything about the audio, video or lighting that hinders me from entering worship”?
  • Details matter (from a clean work space to FOH wiring to a clean stage).

In conclusion, God is doing amazing things in our churches and I believe that as new levels of passionate excellence are birthed, we will all be entering new seasons where the glory of the Lord is going to be made evident in unprecedented ways. Our goal is to become massive “Targets” for the glory of the Lord. What a great time to live in!

  1. There are some great volunteer programs available. VolunteerSpot is one that we have come across that is very intuitive for the users. It allows them to post volunteering opportunities, updates the admin when people cancel, notifies the admin of shortages of people and/or items needed for special events, etc. It is totally web based. You can visit their website at http://www.volunteerspot.com/iconcmo
