How Churches Can Get More Out of Canva

-

TL;DR: Canva templates give churches an easy, affordable way to create polished, on-brand graphics for sermons, events, and social media — without needing a professional designer.
  1. Pre-designed templates speed up production while maintaining visual consistency.
  2. Customizable layouts allow churches to align graphics with their branding and message.
  3. A repeatable design system saves time and improves overall communication quality.

If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re familiar with Canva and how much it has grown in the past few years. Canva now reigns the world of graphic design for non-designers and has created a space for creative teams to collaborate in a way that wasn’t possible 10 years ago. The church media world is no exception to that. Churches across the world are using Canva to streamline their graphic design process and many have benefited greatly from it!

But Is It Really Designed For All Levels?

Canva’s platform is designed to be accessible to users of all levels, including those without any formal training in graphic design. This is a major advantage for churches, as it allows volunteers and staff members to create visual content effortlessly. The interface is designed to be less complicated than other design software such as Photoshop, which enables its users to start creating quickly.

However, we’ve found that while many churches are already using Canva, many are not familiar with the best practices for its use. It’s important to note that having a basic understanding of design principles is still essential for effectively creating graphics, whether using Canva or any other tool. Some foundational knowledge will help churches make the most of Canva’s features and help you improve the quality of your designs..

With this in mind, we crafted an article that outlines three key mistakes we see churches repeatedly make in their designs. These are design principles that we always keep in mind when we are creating our own graphics at Igniter Media. Whether you are creating a design from scratch or using a template you found on Canva, these guidelines remain consistent and will help you maintain clean and effective graphics.

Don’t: Overcomplicate The Design

When creating a graphic in Canva or any other design tool, it’s crucial to avoid overcomplicating the design because simplicity often leads to more effective communication. A cluttered or overly complex graphic can distract or confuse the viewer, making it difficult for them to grasp the intended message quickly.

At Igniter Media, we believe that by keeping the design simple, you ensure that the focus is on the key message or information you want to convey. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also improves the legibility and overall impact of the graphic. Simplicity in design helps in creating a strong, clear, and memorable visual impression, which is especially important in today’s fast-paced world where viewers often make quick judgments—usually in less than 3 seconds.

Does that mean you can’t have fun with the design and try some more abstract ideas? Definitely not. In fact, ‘organized chaos’ is sort of a trend right now in the graphic design world. This approach allows designers to play with different layouts and bold color combinations while still maintaining a cohesive structure that anchors the viewer’s attention. By strategically balancing creative elements, you can create a visually stimulating design that stands out without sacrificing clarity. The key is that the message remains clear.

Here’s an example of how you could overcomplicate a graphic pretty quickly:

Remember, you do not need to include every piece of information about the event on the graphic. Choose a few more important pieces of information and rely on other means of communication for delivering the rest. For example, the social caption, verbal communication during announcements, your mobile app if you have one, and your website are great places to host this information.

Don’t: Forget The Whitespace

Whitespace, often referred to as negative space, is the unmarked area that surrounds various elements of your graphic, such as text, images, and icons. It’s a critical yet frequently overlooked aspect of design, essential for creating a clear and impactful visual message. Neglecting whitespace can lead to designs that feel cramped, busy, and less effective at conveying their intended message.

The strategic use of whitespace not only enhances readability and comprehension but also prevents the design from becoming too crowded or overwhelming. It plays a fundamental role in creating a visual hierarchy, skillfully directing the viewer’s attention to the most important parts of your graphic. This organization helps the audience naturally navigate the information being presented, which is crucial for effective communication and memory.

Furthermore, whitespace contributes significantly to the aesthetic quality of a design, lending it a clean, uncluttered look that is visually appealing. It allows each design element room to “breathe,” making your graphic more accessible and pleasant to engage with. In line with the principle of simplicity in design, integrating ample whitespace into your designs also ensures clearer, more focused communication.

Below is an example, using an Igniter Media Canva Template, which looks better to you?

Remember, that just because there is space doesn’t mean it needs to be filled with more things. The image on the right communicates chaos and it’s hard to look at the text with everything surrounding it. Oftentimes, people will scroll right on by busy graphics like this because it’s too overwhelming to look at.

Don’t: Neglect The Power of Color and Contrast

The use of color and contrast is vital in graphic design as it directly influences the viewer’s perception and interaction with the graphic. Color not only conveys emotions and sets the tone of the message but also plays a critical role in differentiating elements, making the content visually appealing and easy to digest.

Effective contrast, meanwhile, ensures that elements stand out appropriately; it helps to highlight key messages and improves readability, particularly in text-heavy designs. For instance, a well-considered color scheme can guide the viewer’s eye to the most important information or action points in an advertisement, educational material, or branding collateral.

Here’s a few ways you probably don’t want to use contrast:

Low Contrast Text: Light gray text on a white background or dark gray on black can lead to poor readability. (Our example below shows how you can use grays in whites in a successful way)

Overwhelming Color Contrasts: High contrasts like neon colors on black backgrounds can be jarring and strain the eyes. Try to keep the text color white or more muted…you definitely don’t want to hurt people’s eyes!

Inconsistent Contrast Levels: Random contrast levels throughout a design can confuse viewers about where to focus. Again, keep the message clear.

Excessive Contrast: Too much contrast, such as in high contrast checkerboard patterns, can lead to visual fatigue and distract from the main content. Unless creating an illusion is your goal, steer away from this.

Moreover, choosing colors that resonate with the intended audience or purpose can enhance engagement and emotional response, making the design not only visually striking but also functionally effective for its specific purpose. So the thoughtful combination of color and contrast is vital in creating a successful graphic.

Here’s an example contrasting between a good way of using color and contrast versus a…different way.\

A good rule of thumb is if you can’t read the text, you should probably find a different color. This is an extreme example just to show you how important it is to ensure that you pick the right colors that display the text in the best possible way. Another good rule of thumb, if your eyes are straining while looking at the graphic, then everyone else’s eyes will probably be straining too and that won’t encourage people to engage with your content.

Conclusion

So, leveraging Canva’s user-friendly platform really can significantly enhance a church’s visual communication strategy.
