New Book Sheds Light on False Teachings of Christian Science

In the early days of ChurchTechToday, I occasionally wrote more personal articles that reflected technology use at my own church. In 2011 for my 10-year salvation anniversary, I even shared my testimony of leaving Christian Science and finding Jesus. More recently, God placed it on my heart to strike out as an author. I found that there were still many still entrenched in Christian Science theology within my own family, and I spent time praying and asking God to direct me in my writing and pursuit of work that would glorify him.

There are few times most of us feel as though we’ve heard super clearly from God, and this was one of those times. I heard him ask me to put together a book of stories of people like me who have left the little-known faith of Christian Science. I grew up in this faith (which is not Scientology, by the way) and left in the spring of 2001 when all my doubts came to the forefront. God kept putting people in my path to help me understand that the faith I was raised in was not where he wanted me. (My full story is in chapter two.) Through my work and support of the Fellowship of Former Christian Scientists ministry, an outreach ministry for those who are questioning this confusing cult, I was able to get in touch with people just like me who had left Christian Science and found a saving relationship in Jesus Christ. My new book is the culmination of being brave to step out in faith, to share my story and the stories of others, and to help educate people on the damaging multigenerational religious trauma that occurs through cults even today.

False Faiths

Call them heresies, false faiths, destructive religions, or thought reform—any church that strays from the fundamental and widely-accepted Christian doctrines is deemed a cult. Founded in the 1870s by Mary Baker Eddy, who claimed to have “rediscovered the lost element of Christian healing,” Christian Science continues to lead people astray from biblical truth and often causes intense suffering because followers reject all forms of modern medical treatment.

In my book, Leaving Christian Science: 10 Stories of New Faith in Jesus Christ, I share the complicated journey of leaving the religion and comprehending biblical Christianity.

In these ten intensely personal narratives, former Christian Scientists bravely recount their journey out of the religion and into authentic, biblical faith in Jesus Christ. Each chapter addresses a different theme, shining light on theological inconsistencies taught by Mary Baker Eddy in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. These themes include matter, the body, God, Sin, Mary Baker Eddy, Jesus, prayer, the Holy Spirit, contagion, and the Bible.

Each story of leaving Christian Science was hard won; no easy recoveries or lightning-bolt moments here, just one small step after another made in the hopes that truth could be found.

With reflection questions, pastoral teaching, related Bible verses, and a guiding letter from the author, each story navigates common obstacles and paves the way for a deeper understanding of the Christian faith.

I'm thankful for the voice I've had here at ChurchTechToday for the last 13 years. It has been and continues to be a joy to serve churches and ministries with information, education, and resources. While my book doesn't tie in directly to church technology, it was important for me to share this new project with you, my readers.
