Increase Church Productivity with Slack

-

Slack is a great platform for messaging and communicating real time.  It is described as a “messaging app for teams.”  Better yet, it’s free for up to 10 apps and up to ten thousand searchable messages.  If you are looking for ways for your ministry teams to collaborate more efficiently – Slack may be the tool for you.

Better Communication

Slack allows you to send direct messages to staff members or use channels for different subject areas. You might consider setting up a channels for the church newsletter or prayer requests.

slackMany wonder why they should use a messaging tool when “email works just fine.”  Email does work, however, slacks messages are delivered “real time” –  there is no lag or concern about deliverability.  It is so much easier to follow a conversation in Slack.  Have you ever tried to follow a thread with multiple people hitting “reply all” to an email?  It’s certainly not efficient.

If you break your ministry teams up into their own channels, you can easily click on a channel from the left side bar and just start typing your message. Everyone invited to that channel will get a notification in their slack app on their desktop computer. What’s also great is that, by default (and this can be modified), if they don’t see or read the message on the desktop app it will then be forwarded to their mobile app in the form of a notification. But it’s also smart enough to not send the mobile notification if you did read it on the desktop app. No more CC’ing everyone on an email of which you’re unsure if it got read. You know when people are on and available.

Share Files

Sharing files is as simple as dragging and dropping the file.  Once you’ve shared the file, anyone on that channel will be able to click to download the file.  Imagine being able to share the newsletter, directory or bulletin for input, comments and final approval.

Easy to Search

This is my favorite part of Slack.  It is so easy to search.  Maybe you remembered a certain thread about an upcoming event … but can’t quite remember all the details.  Simply type in your search terms … and all the conversations with that term are returned in the right side pane.

We love using Slack at our office.  It took a little getting used to as sending email for simple things had become second nature to us.  Let us know if you are using Slack, and how it’s going.
