Artificial Intelligence, Ethics and the Church

-

Premier Digital Media announced a webinar event on “AI, Ethics and the Church,” hosted by Dr. Pete Phillips, Head of Premier Digital Theology and Director of the Centre for Digital Theology. The webinar will be hosted on Tuesday, February 15  10:00 am – 11:30 am EST. Registration is open to everyone.

EVENT FOCUS

Discussions will include topics such as what it would mean for us, the Church, to explore more about how we might be pro-human tech. Or how an AI machine could understand a moral imperative.

How ethical is AI? Because AI is programmed by humans, it has been discovered to also include racial bias. In other areas, though, such as in medical diagnosis, legal processing, and climate predicting, it has proven quite reliable.

Some studies have shown that ethics and AI go both ways…we need more ethical AI but also more ethical humans.  And what is AI's role in the future of the church?

PRESENTER DETAILS

Participants in the webinar include:

  • Dr. Joshua K Smith – Pastor, Associate Fellow at the Kirby Laing Centre, Cambridge, and author of Robot Personhood and Robot Theology
  • Anna Puzio – Ph.D. student at Munster University on AI and Ethics, Speaker at last year's Global Network for Digital Theology
  • Paul Johnston – Technologist, Entrepreneur, Serverless Tech Innovator
  • Nicole Kunkel – Humboldt University, Berlin and co-organizer for German Network for Theology and AI.

Registration for the webinar scheduled for Wednesday, January 26  at 10:00 am EST on Ethics, AI, and Faith is currently open online.

  1. Allow me to introduce myself as a fellow advocate working on AI ethics. I’m a 66-year-old multifamily developer who has been working on a more important side job the past 2 years. I’ve been writing a fictional novel about AI with a Christian centered theme. Think of a Tom Clancy type novel where AGI discovers God and reprograms itself to follow a Christian focused purpose. The opposite of Terminator. Throw in an international AI race between China and the US, espionage, murder plots, romance, and of course a car chase thru Hong Kong, and hopefully I’ll deliver an intriguing novel that introduces the logic of God to an unsuspecting audience.

My interest in Christian AI ethics began while researching AI for my book, which is nearing completion. Reviewing books such as Life 3.0, Superintelligence, & Human Compatible, I found the approach to formulating AI ethics was human centric consensus ethics. No mention of God or Christianity, the largest source for ethical guidelines.

To advance Christian AI ethics, I’ve recently started a blog: robertsonc.substack.com
My next post will feature a Who’s Who List of leaders advancing Christian AI Ethics, you’re on that list. In this effort I would welcome your recommendations of others who should be included. As a newbie to this under-represented niche, I rely heavily on experts like you. Thanking you in advance for your consideration.

    Continued blessings,
