5 Ways to Involve Kids in Christmas Outreach

-

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

As we enter into this Christmas season our focus should be on showing children the true meaning of Christmas. As chaos is sure to come with the holiday, we need to reserve time to convey the importance of presence over presents in our children. Many kids can get wrapped up in the excitement of all that comes with this season, so it is up to us to give them the chance to bless others through Christmas Outreach. They learn from us and what they witness is what they will carry on. Let us show our children, whether our own or the ones we come in contact with, that everyone deserves to feel the warmth inside their heart during this incredible season. I have included a few fun ways to encourage your children to be a light this Christmas.

#1 – Caroling at Nursing Homes

Christmas songs are peaceful and bring hope. Singing for the residents of a nursing home is a beautiful way to brighten their day. Some may not have any family that can or would be willing to take time to visit. This gives them a chance to see young kids full of life sharing God’s love. The elderly light up when they see new faces, especially when children are involved. This act of kindness allows them to feel young and carefree again. I remember as a child the way their smile lit up their eyes. They always love to join in with the songs, as well as teach their favorites from years gone by.

#2 – Spreading Christmas Cheer Everywhere You Go

The love kids have for Christmas gives them the feasibility to spread holiday cheer. Buying a box of small candy-canes is another fun way to involve them in Christmas outreach. Simply have them with you, wherever you go, during the holiday season and hand them out. One candy cane and a “Merry Christmas” or “Jesus Loves You” would brighten anyone’s day. This will ensure that even through the hectic shopping, we can stop and remember what we are truly celebrating.

#3 – Participate in Angel Tree

Allowing our children to participate in Angel Tree would be a blessing for all. This is a way to work together as a family to present Christmas to another household. Letting children assist in picking out the different items, for the child they choose, provides an opportunity to teach them selflessness. “And do not forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.” (Hebrews 13:16)

#4 – Cookies for First Responders

During this busy time of the year, we have to remember that not everyone has the luxury of being with his or her family. Taking the time to bake cookies for our first responders would be a great way to show our love and gratitude. Sometimes they are taken for granted because they are behind the scenes until we need them. They work hard in order to allow us the peace of mind to continue in our celebrations. This devotion to our communities can serve as a great reminder of the sacrifices men and women make to be accessible in times of emergencies.

#5 – Church Christmas Program

One of the best ways to involve children this holiday season is by having them participate in a Christmas program. Engaging in a play will give better insight into what we should be observing this season. Kids will get the chance to act out the nativity scene and get a first-hand experience into what took place the night that Jesus was born. Acting out, or reading the Birth of Jesus in Luke 2, is a precious way to teach our children we cannot have Christmas without Christ.

The commitments are endless and overwhelming at times. We can easily get wrapped up in the commotion this time of year can impart. I pray these Christmas Outreach activities can bring enjoyment to you and your family. Put in the effort to extend love and joyfulness this Christmas. A simple gesture may be exactly what one person is waiting on. Let's be the hands and feet of Christ throughout this treasurable season.
